HISTORY

2006

Ken Anderson created the OPEN SKIES insurance program, based on the original program he designed a decade earlier, but with improved coverage, lower premiums and over 150 local agents throughout the province of British Columbia
The program was launched April 1, 2006 in British Columbia for quads and snowmobiles, providing coverage for liability and/or physical damage coverage
Discounts were available for club membership in ATVBC and ABCSC, as well as a safety discount for completion of the approved safety courses.

2007

The program was expanded to offer Section B, Accident Benefits to the operator and passenger. Although it does not duplicate coverage word for word, it is based on the coverage offered through ICBC on licensed vehicles
OPEN SKIES was launched in Saskatchewan without Section B or trail bikes as still awaiting regulatory approval
OPEN SKIES was then launched in Nova Scotia in the fall, without coverage for trail bikes.
Premiums were reduced for physical damage in B C
OPEN SKIES expanded to over 190 local B C brokers

2008 to date

Additional discounts for purchasing "package" insurance or multi-units in one policy were introduced
Coverage was broadened
Replacement Cost was offered on a new quad or snowmobile for up to two years from date of delivery on the unit, subject to underwriting guidelines
OPEN SKIES expanded to over 225 licensed B C brokers providing local service
At the request of the newly formed provincial association the British Columbia Off Road Motorcycle Association, OPEN SKIES was then extended to include trail bikes in B C
Application has been made to expand OPEN SKIES in Saskatchewan for trail bikes
Application has been made for business use, excluding guiding or rental operations
The website www.openskiesins.ca has been launched, allowing individuals to obtain online quotes and policy issuance including a pink card as proof of insurance by return email, using secure credit card payment. Appointed Brokers will also have access to do the same, including renewals and endorsements

As approval is received from each Provincial regulatory authority, the website will make available the same process as operational now in B C
